Early Voting (open) All states have established some form of process for voters to be able to cast a ballot prior to Election Day. In many instances, however, the process is restricted to special circumstances. Some states require registered voters to present an acceptable reason that will prevent them from casting a ballot in-person, on Election Day. There are two ways a voter may cast an early vote:
In-person early voting allows registered voters to cast a ballot in-person at an early voting center (also known as an early voting precinct) designated by local elections officials. In general, early voting centers are placed in a different location from you Election Day polling place.
Another form of early voting is casting a ballot by mail which is often referred to as absentee voting.
Early voting begins 15 days before an election. The county auditor will designate the business days and times during which the early voting election precinct will be open and publish notice of the dates and times in the official county newspaper once each week for three consecutive weeks immediately before the day of the election.
Absentee Voting/Vote By Mail (open) How to request an Absent Voter's Ballot Complete an Absent Voter's Ballot Application and deliver it to your County Election Administrator (Auditor) at any time during an election year. Ballots are available to voters 40 days prior to each Election Day. When the ballots are prepared, the county auditor will send a ballot and other information to all who have applied to vote early.
When to return complete absentee ballots In-person: the day before the election By mail: postmarked the day before the election
Provisional Voting (N/A) North Dakota is exempt from HAVA's provisional ballot requirement because it does not have voter registration.
If you do not have one of the forms of identification listed above, you still have the right to vote if:
- An election poll worker is able to vouch for your identity and residence.
- You complete a Voter's Affidavit on which you certify, under oath, your identity and that you are a resident within this precinct.
Sample Ballots Provision of sample ballots may vary by county. Please contact your County Election Administrator (Auditor) for more information about the distribution of sample ballots. Generally, sample ballots are printed in the local newspaper and will be posted at your polling place on Election Day.
Type of Primary (open) North Dakota is an open primary state. Since there is no voter registration in the state of North Dakota, voters may vote for the candidate of any party.
